An Idea is How it Started.

Money Bee is Compassion

A Trend Some May not Notice.

In the year of 2015, I was sexually assaulted by a man who told me that he loved me. This man was always there to, “help,” anytime I faced a struggle. I became conflicted, internally, not realizing that this man was only helping me because he wanted to abuse me. The effects on me, being subjected to such toxic behaviors, also came without a warning; I cut my hair off and suffered from an eating disorder.

In 2022, after being assaulted for the second time by the same man, I finally built the courage to flee and never go back; I cut my hair off again.

I hated looking at myself in the mirror. Some days, I avoided the mirror, entirely. I found myself living in a shelter with a few ladies who had just fled similar situations; we all had short hair, except one.

More Common Than Unheard of

Quite often when subjected to such traumas, women may attempt to empower themselves by cutting their hair off. Some say it is how they take their power back from their abusers. Not all survivors end up being empowered by this behavior and some will immediately regret their decision, leading to a decrease in self-esteem and overall mental health. Sadly, it happens. This is why Money Bee was developed. We understand the struggle and we are here because your self-esteem and your mental health matters.

It’s More than Just Hair

Just like your face, your hair is on your head and it is how people recognize you. While living in a second stage shelter I had started braiding my hair, adding synthetic hair extensions as part of my self-care routine since I was very unhappy with my short hair. Periodically when having to maintain my hairstyle, I would seek services of various respite programs, hoping I could have the kids looked after so I could more effectively perform this task, but I was often turned down since self care, is not considered an urgent matter. Braiding my hair could take me days to do with the amount of interruptions, being a single mother with three children, and nobody there to help. I always want to give my children the best care I can possibly give to them, but Mommy also needs to be taken care of. The frustration that came with having to explain this to so many others is immense; it’s not just hair, its a part of your identity.
